Our plans for 2018

We are excited to be at the end of our renovations which  whilst providing an increase in capacity also most importantly provides totally refurbished rooms for our men in addition to new kitchens. This extensive work  has increased our single bedroom accommodation to 60 from the previous 50, a 20% increase!

We continue to  negotiate with the SA Government for leases over additional properties that would make acceptable boarding houses as the need for our services continues to increase. We anticipate that our pursuits will bear fruit this year.

Our approach to the Government is to locate unused accommodation within or close to the CBD. Provided the Government is prepared to offer a reasonable lease - price and length - we can show a win-win-win bottom line: empty Government property put to good use; a reasonable income to the Government; and a further group of men are provided with reasonable short- to medium-term accommodation supervised by Carrington Cottages.

Projects for the near future

•Upgrade furniture and equipment in residents’ rooms

•Provide Wi-Fi access for all residents

•Install photovoltaic electricity systems to reduce our substantial power bills

•Provide more common areas for recreation and support activities

•Ensure basic ambulance care is adopted by all residents

•Provide “starter kits” (basic household goods – linen; cookware; cleaning materials) to residents moving on to private accommodation

•Provide supervised private accommodation in suburban flats as a first stage for tenants on transition to independent living

•Create an improved cohesive support framework for tenants.

  •  Improve networking and liaison with other Adelaide homelessness agencies

•Explore an extension of our model that works to other locations outside the CBD that could be used as a sort of “halfway house” for men who are becoming ready to move to live independently
